It’s an interesting question. There is a tendency seen in Indian women to spend so much money on gold jewelery. One would believe it’s their way to show off. But the truth lies somewhere else.

Let me introduce some of the reasons behind why do women love to wear gold:

Gold-As Luxury

How would you define the term ‘Luxury ‘as? Luxury is something which brings great comfort especially at great expense. Women need luxury because it enhances their self-respect, self-regard. So, ‘show-off’ is not the only reason behind their mindset to buy jewelery. They might be trying to impress someone, but it’s not the only reason. Some women will consume luxury for their own precious satisfaction and they certainly do not need anybody to share their satisfaction.

India’s affair with gold goes back to millennium or even before. Gold was an ancient currency and collateral to borrow against in critical times. But there were no proper regulations in place at those times which led to explosion in gold purchases. Many crooks have imported gold and many a men made loans against it. But now most gold coming into India enters legally through banks. Due to this, the women felt safer buying the jewelery than before as gold and diamond also allow them to bypass a lot of India’s legendary red tape. Gold is widely accepted in any bank without any documentation.

Then there is another reason, which is ‘Lakshmi’. Lakshmi is Hindu goddess of wealth, health, fortune and prosperity. Lakshmi is depicted in Indian art as an elegantly dressed, prosperity showering, golden-colored woman with owl as her vehicle signifying the importance of economic activity. She wears ornaments full of gold and golden ruby-studded crown. Her complexion is also shown as golden. And Indian women are named as Lakshmi' of the house. So, these Indian women has a strong belief in this Golden-clad Lakshmi goddess.

Gold-Pure-Sacred

Gold is considered to be pure and sacred. It is considered as symbol of wealth. People offer gold to their gods and find it as a ritual that should be practiced. Gold has acquired symbolic and monetary values. Indian women love the gold because of these sacred reasons.                                                                    

Gold-Whitish-Skin

Indian women might have an admiration for silver or platinum, but our Indian women’s whitish skin tone somehow finds perfect compatibility with gold. The Indian woman might be flaunted with a heavy set of costumes, but even a tiniest bit of gold can turn her into a diva.

Nowadays, there has been a makeover done on the trends of golden jewelery. The versatility of gold makes it a perfect match to go with everything. There has been so much amount of delicate kind of jewelery metalwork done on gold that most of the women will get spoiled just for the vast number of choices they have.

The women in India have become more modern in terms of their outfits which go near to a western culture. And when it comes to western outfit, there are so many choices of gold jewelery pieces that one could team them with.

And for the right reasons, the performance of gold has surpassed the performance of equity or real estate market. It is termed as just the right asset to let your savings keep a step ahead of the recession.

Indian women are just crazy shoppers. They tend to get bored of the same old designs over the years. Gold is re-moldable.  So, golden jewelery allows them the liberty to re-mold their old set or design items and get it restructured the way they want.  This is very much difficult in case of silver or platinum.

Gold is considered as a symbol of prosperity.  For Indian women, it is also a perceived visible, external denotation of their social position. According to recent trends, piercing of body, and wearing rings around them has become a symbol of courage. There has been a large number of variety for this trend like belly rings, cartilage earrings, septum jewelery, nose rings and fine gold body jewelery.
